Wieder konnte ich einige Wochen in unserem Projekt in Gurku verbringen und bin nun gesund und dankbar zurückgekehrt, denn dieser Einsatz war recht erfolgreich.

Again, I was able to spend a few weeks in our project in Gurku and have now returned healthy and grateful, because this mission has been quite successful.

Tatsächlich haben nun alle Witwen in unserem Projekt ein business gefunden, mit dem sie etwas Geld verdienen können. Das war ja eines unser Hauptanliegen: alleinstehenden Frauen zu ermöglichen, für sich und ihre Kinder durch eigenes Einkommen den Lebensunterhalt zu verdienen, anstatt sie lediglich mit Geld und Lebensmittelspenden zu unterstützen.

In fact, all the widows in our project have found a business that they can use to earn some money. That was one of our main concerns: to enable single women to earn a living for themselves and their children through their own income, rather than simply supporting them with money and food donations.

Nun verdienen sie Geld durch eigene Arbeit. Es wird nicht gleich für alles reichen, aber ein Anfang ist gemacht und gibt Hoffnung. Und es wurde auch sichtbar, dass die Freude über den eigenen Erfolg hilft, die Traumata von Vertreibung und Vergewaltigung durch Boko Haram zu mildern.

Now they earn money through their own work. It will not be enough for everything, but a beginning is made and there is hope. And it has also become apparent that the joy of one's own success helps alleviate the traumas of expulsion and rape by Boko Haram.

(Für alle noch einmal zur Erinnerung: dies ist ein interreligiöses selbstverwaltetes Binnenflüchtlings-Camp für Menschen, denen die Terrorgruppe „Boko Haram“ ihre Lebensgrundlagen zerstört und sie von ihrem Land vertrieben hat. Insbesondere die Witwen, denen BH die Ehemänner ermordet hat, versuchen wir von „Widowscare e.V.“ zu unterstützen und ihnen zu einem Neuanfang zu helfen.

(For all, once again, this is an interfaith self-managed IDP camp for people who have been devastated by the Boko Haram terrorist group and driven from their land. Especially the widows BH has murdered their husbands we from "Widowscare e.V." try to support and help them to make a fresh start.)

Das wohl schönste Projekt war die Eröffnung eines eigenen Restaurants. Wir nannten es „Martha’s Restaurant“ und erinnerten damit an die Gastfreundschaft der Freundin Jesu. (Lukas 10,38ff)

Probably the most beautiful project was the opening of an own restaurant. We called it "Martha's Restaurant" and reminded of the hospitality of this friend of Jesus. (Luke 10: 38ff)

Martha kochte für Jesus und seine Jünger mit großem Fleiß und bewirtete sie großzügig. Auch wenn Jesus – im Hinblick auf ihre Schwester Maria erinnerte, dass Bildung wichtiger ist, als ein voller Bauch, wird er doch ihr Mahl sehr genossen haben. Mögen die Frauen beides beachten: Gastlichkeit und Bildung!

Martha diligently cooked for Jesus and his disciples and generously served them. Even though Jesus reminded her – in respect of her sister Mary - that education is more important than a full belly, he will have enjoyed her meal very much. May the women pay attention to both hospitality and education!

Erste Gäste - first costumers

Nun kommen wir zur „shopping mall“ in Gurku. Fünf Läden laden ein zum Kaufen.

Now we come to the "shopping mall" in Gurku. Five shops invite you to buy.

Im ersten Witwenladen gibt es alles, was die Frauen jetzt so herstellen: Kleider, Strickwaren, Kunsthandwerk, Erdnusöl u.a. Außerdem kann man hier preiswert sein Handy aufladen lassen.

In the first widow's shop there is everything the women can produce: clothes, knitwear, handicrafts, peanut oil, etc. In addition, you can get cheap phone charge here.

Im zweiten Witwenladen steht die neue Pelletmaschine, mit der die Frauen nun Fischfutter produzieren – für ihre eigene Fischzucht, aber auch zum Verkauf.

Im dritten Laden verkaufen die Witwen Plastikwaren aller Art, die ja den größten Teil ihres Hausrats ausmachen. Plastik geht halt nicht so leicht kaputt wie Glas und Porzellan – und es ist preiswerter.

In the third shop, the widows sell plastic items of all kinds, which make up most of their household goods. Plastic does not break as easily as glass and porcelain - and it is cheaper.

Den vierten Laden hat Monday gemietet, ein junger Mann, der schon bisher in einem kleinen Anbau an seinem Haus einen Laden mit Waren des täglichen Bedarfs geführt hat. Hier können die Menschen im Camp Zucker und Salz, Seife und Streichhölzer, Kekse und Getränke etc. kaufen.

The fourth store was rented by Monday, a young man who has previously run a shop selling daily necessities in a small annex to his house. Here, people of the camp can buy sugar and salt, soap and matches, biscuits and drinks, etc.

Alle Läden haben Licht und das Restaurant einen Kühlschrank. Dafür und für die Pelletmaschine gibt es eine neue Solaranlage.

All shops have light and the restaurant has a fridge. There is a new solar system for this and for the pellet machine.

Nicht nur Fische – eine ganze Reihe anderer Kleintiere werden inzwischen von den Frauen erfolgreich gezüchtet in ihrer neuen kleinen „animal farm“.

Es gibt Hähnchen, Puten, Schnecken, grasscutters (ähnlich großen Meerschweinchen) und Hasen.

There are chickens, turkeys, snails, grasscutters (similar sized guinea pigs) and rabbits.

Und das Futter für die Tiere versuchen sie nun auch selbst anzubauen.

And they also try to grow the food for the animals themselves.

Das größte Glück für alle Menschen im Camp (ca.1300) ist wohl das Wasser, dass es hier reichlich in der Erde gibt und das wir inzwischen aus drei Brunnen ausschließlich mit Solarpumpen fördern.

The greatest happiness for all people in the camp (about 1300) is probably the water, that there is plenty in the earth and that we now get up in three wells exclusively with solar pumps.

Und apropos Umweltschutz: endlich haben wir das Loch in einer Gasleitung gefunden und repariert, sodass nun auch wirklich das Biogas fließt und den Schulköchinnen ermöglicht, das Frühstück für die Schüler (warmes flüssiges Müsli) mit selbst generiertem Gas (aus dem Toilettenhaus) umweltfreundlich zu kochen.

And apropos environmental protection: finally we have found the hole in a gas pipe and repaired, so now really the biogas flows and allows the school cooks, the breakfast for the students (warm liquid cereal) with self-generated gas (from the toilet house) to cook environmentally friendly.

Natürlich haben wir auch wieder einen Koch-workshop gemacht. Diesmal haben sich die Frauen gewünscht zu lernen, wie man Salate herstellen kann. Und wie man am besten Pommes frites macht.

Of course we also did a cooking workshop again. This time, women have wanted to learn how to make salads. And how best to make french fries.

Das Schuljahr in der camp-eigenen Grundschule wurde in vier Klassen erfolgreich abgeschlossen. Allerdings haben nicht alle Erstklässler der Sprung in die zweite Klasse geschafft. Es sind ja auch camp-fremde Schüler dabei, z.B. von durchziehenden Hirtennomaden, den Fulani.

The school year in the camp's own primary school was successfully completed in four classes. However, not all first graders have made the leap into second grade. There are also non-camp students, e.g. of passing pastoral nomads, the Fulani.

Das heißt, dass es ab dem kommenden Schuljahr zwei erste Klassen geben wird, a und b. Somit sind es dann sechs Klassen, für die die Klassenräume inzwischen errichtet sind – aber die Lehrer fehlen.

Bisher sind drei Lehrer fest angestellt, es fehlen mindestens noch zwei. Ein Lehrergehalt beträgt mindestens 50 Euro im Monat. Spender dringend gesucht!

This means that there will be two first classes starting next school year, a and b. Thus, there are six classes for which the classrooms are now built - but the teachers are missing. So far, three teachers are permanently employed, at least two are missing. A teacher's salary is at least 50 euros a month. Donors wanted urgently!

In Maiduguri, der Provinzhauptstadt im Boko-Haram-Gebiet können wir weiterhin nur 2225 Witwen mit Lebensmittelhilfe und 133 Waisen mit Schulgebühren unterstützen.

In Maiduguri, the provincial capital in the Boko Haram area, we only continue to support 2,225 widows with food aid and 133 orphans with school fees.

Wenn es der dortigen Kirchgemeinde gelingt, ein Stück Land zu kaufen, wollen wir versuchen auch dort Häuser für Witwen zu bauen.

If the local church succeeds in buying a piece of land, we will try to build houses for widows there as well.

Im Nordosten Nigerias ist die Lebenssituation der Menschen immer noch nicht sicher. Sie bitten uns weiterhin um Unterstützung durch Gebete und Spenden. Ich finde, sie haben beides verdient.

In northeastern Nigeria, people's living conditions are still uncertain. They continue to ask for help through prayer and donations. I think they deserve both.

Deshalb danke ich an dieser Stelle allen Betern und Unterstützern im Namen der Betroffenen.

Therefore, I would like to thank all the prayers and supporters on behalf of the affected persons.
